And the winners are...
You! Yes, you. You made it through January and barely stopped moving the entire time, so congratulations to everyone. There were some truly awe-inspiring players this year, but even if you didn't crack the top 10 you should still feel good about your month.
Final results for most things are available in the Standings pages, but to make it official here are the top players, teams and dogs plus a few more statistics for the number-crunchers and data nerds among us (myself included).
Top Team: The Mixologists (15,243.88 kms)
Does anyone know what they are mixing up over there? Whatever it is they must be mixing it with a family-sized can of whoop-ass, because they got out to an early lead and never looked back. Last year's winners the YMCA Posse had to settle for second place this time, and the rest of the field could only look up the road and wonder where the front-runners went. Congrats to the Mixologists and their Team Lead and General Manager Tony Caprio. If the Toronto Maple Leafs could pick players half as well as Tony they'd be hoisting the Stanley Cup every year.
Top Player: Debbie Beaumont (1,813.6 kms)
Powering her way to the front of the pack in 2026 with 139 entries and 14 different activities, Debbie held her lead over a certain David Beaumont for most of the month. Super impressive.
Top Dog: Miss Jane (221.96 kms)
5 year old Bernadoodle Miss Jane led the pack this year by a wide margin. Led by her human companion Betty, Miss Jane did not miss a single day in spite of the kind of epic snow and frigid temperatures her hometown of Scarborough hasn't seen in, well, ever. She is the best girl.
More Interesting Numbers
Most Popular Player: Judy Boyer, with 8 pieces of Flair received.
Most Generous Player: Di Pain, with a whopping 23 pieces of Flair sent.
What is Flair? Flair is the best way to send your undying support and encouragement to your WinterActive teammates and even opponents. This year we collectively sent 139 pieces of Flair to one another. How many did you send? Flair is also this.
Most Active Player: Jyl McGunigal, with 200 activity entries
Most Adventurous Player: Jyl McGunigal again, with 23 different activities
Most Physical Player: David Beaumont, 1205.75 kms
Mentally Healthiest Player: Judy Boyer, 685 kms
Most Social Player: Bill Baker, 1061.13 kms
Observant players will have noticed that Volunteering is generously weighted at 6.5 kms per hour this year. Do you agree? If you have any feedback on this please contact me with your thoughts.
Total Distance: 42,507 kms (26,412 miles for our U.S. friends). Way past our target distance of 25,000 kms and an average of 1,371 kms per day.
Best Day: Saturday January 17 when we logged 1,745.4 kms
Busiest Day: Monday January 12 when we logged 199 separate activity entries
Total Actual Distance: 9,316.8 kms
This total is based on the un-weighted distance travelled for distance-based activities like walking, hiking, cycling etc. Even if we remove indoor cycling using a smart trainer (which don't actually move, technically) the total is still 7,413.6 kms. Wow.
Total Time Recorded: 6,103 hours
Based on time-based activities only. We have no way of calculating time spent on distance-based activities, so the true number is likely a lot higher.
Total Number of Activities Recorded: 5,256 That's around 168 entries per day on average.
Average Number of Activities Recorded per Player: 78.4 (based on 67 active players)
Top 5 Activities by number of players:
| Activity | Players |
|---|---|
| Walking | 51 |

| Housework | 544 |
| Board Games | 365 |

If you were active in Rowing (team), Badminton, Bowling, Martial Arts, Nordic Walking, Kayaking / Canoeing, Tennis or Dogsledding, congratulations. You won that activity since you were the only player in it.

And finally...
A huge thank you to everyone who played this year, and especially to our international (i.e. not from Canada) friends at Kemira. Plus a friendly pat on the head and a nice treat to all the Top Dogs who took their human companions for daily walks no matter what the weather.
A note to players not from the eastern half of North America - this winter has been the snowiest, coldest, most challenging winter in years. Record-breaking snowfall was seen here at WinterActive HQ in Toronto, and it has been crazy cold (-15 to -20 degrees C for days on end) too. It has been a real winter. Kudos to everyone who got out there and kept going all month in spite of the difficult conditions.
No survey this time, but if you have anything you would like to see done differently, or an idea for a new feature, activity or anything else you can contact me directly using the Contact form.

January is over!
But you can still enter any activities you completed in January up until February 6. Final results will be revealed after that unless everyone finishes their entries before that date.

What is Housework?
Housework = work in and around the house (or apartment / condo / cottage / castle / etc). This includes things like plumbing or electrical work, renovations and other tool-based activities in addition to things we traditionally associate with housework like cleaning and cooking.
New Activity: Dogsledding
For the first time ever WinterActive now includes Dogsledding as an activity.
Hard to believe it hasn't been included before, given its status as an iconic winter sport, but not many people have the right number of dogs to achieve forward sled momentum. Until now.
If you have a request for an activity not currently in the mix, please use the contact form to let your WAVEiii host know about it.

We are too good!
Since our original target distance of 10,000 kilometres was crushed before day 10, management has decided to raise the bar to 25,000 kilometres.
What happens if we surpass that distance? Not much, really. But won't it feel good.
Well done, everyone.

Please check your activity entries.
This is just a reminder to check your activity entries for errors. Sometimes we misplace a decimal or our thumb hits the wrong key on our keyboard or phone and we mistakenly enter something that is clearly impossible.
If you make an error you can easily correct it or even delete it and try again.
If you see another player with an activity that looks suspect, don't panic. It's a mistake and will be corrected. If you know that player you might want to reach out to them and ask them to make a correction. If you don't know that player please use the Contact form to let the WinterActive admin "team" know and we will take it from there.

Share your current read.
After a fun day of Winter Activities, it's nice to relax with a good book. Lots of you are doing just that, so why not share a photo of what you're reading? Could be a photo of you in your favourite chair with a book and a warm (or cool) beverage, or maybe just the cover of the book.
Fellow WinterActivists would love to know.

Find your tribe!
The Find a Player page now shows which players are part of the Kemira family. Look for the K symbol in the players table to see who your colleagues are in WinterActive.

What time zone are we using?
WinterActive is based in Toronto Canada, which is in the Eastern time zone of North America. We will be using Eastern Standard Time for the opening and closing dates.
Players in other time zones may have to wait on Day 1 for things to open, but you have lots of flexibility as to when you can enter your activities.
Everyone has lots of time even after January 31 to enter their activities, so the time zone won't have any negative effect.
The official date and time is always visible in the footer of any page.

How many players on a team?
Because WinterActive is a relatively small event, teams are limited to 15 players. This is so no single team can dominate through sheer numbers, and makes things more fair and competitive for smaller teams.
Don't forget you can also view team standings by average per player, not just total kilometres.

WinterActive goes global
Regular WinterActive players will have noticed a more international flavour to the event this year, with players signing up from Brazil, Poland, Finland, Germany and the U.S.
These are people from Kemira, a multi-national company based in Helsinki and a long-time client of WAVEiii. Kemira holds an event every September, and we are pleased to welcome them back in January.
